Knowing When To Make A Career Move

Written by Minted Search Group | Nov 23, 2024 3:24:30 PM

According to a recent survey by LinkedIn, 70% of professionals in the US are not passionate about their current job. In Canada, a survey by Hays found that 43% of employees are planning to leave their current job within the next two years.

With so many people considering a career move, it's important to evaluate your current position, identify your career goals, and determine if it's time to make a change.

But, how do you know if it's time for a change? Here are some signs to look out for:

You're not growing: If you feel like you're not learning anything new and you've hit a plateau, it might be time to move on.

You're not passionate: If the Sunday Scaries get to you and have you feeling like this when you think about Monday rolling around, then it's probably the right time to explore other options.

You're not happy: If you're unhappy in your current job and it's affecting your mental health and well-being, it's definitely time to make a change.

Okay so let's say you've decided you'd like to consider a career move... what now?

Evaluate your current position:

Take a step back and evaluate your current job.

  • What do you like about it?
  • What don't you like about it?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What are your career goals?

Identify your career goals:

Think about what you want to achieve in your career.

Do you want to climb the corporate ladder? Do you want to switch industries? Do you want to start your own business? Identifying your career goals can help you determine if your current job aligns with your aspirations.

Put the feelers out:

Deciding you might want to make a career move doesn't need to be a big song and dance. Take it as slow as needed, put the feelers out and see what's out there. Research other companies and industries that align with your career goals. Network with professionals in your desired field and attend industry events. This can help you gain insight into other career paths and opportunities that you might not have even considered before.

Speak to a recruiter / mentor:

It can be helpful to talk with someone who has been in your shoes before. A recruiter or mentor will help you evaluate your current position and determine what other opportunities are available that align with your goals. They can also assist in researching job descriptions and compensation packages.

Ultimately deciding you might want to make a move in your career can feel a bit daunting, but it will be incredibly rewarding. Remember, finding the perfect job takes time and effort, but with the right resources and guidance, you can achieve your career goals.
