Navigating the Decision to Return to a Previous Employer

Maybe you left your previous company for a new opportunity, but now you're considering a role with your old employer. If so, you're not alone. Today we want to talk about the pros and cons of returning to a former employer.

In the past, returning to a former employer could be perceived as a step backwards. However, in today's job market, it's much more common for job seekers to "boomerang" back to a previous employer. Companies are increasingly embracing returning employees as a valuable way to rehire top talent that they know and trust.

A recent study found 65% of 900 senior managers in firms across Canada have rehired a former employee who left the company on good terms. Why?

They bring in-demand skills, knowledge and experience, have proven job performance and skill sets and can smoothly integrate and make an impact in a relatively short amount of time. Returning hires usually have gained some valuable experience since leaving that can improve their performance when they return.

But why would you want to return to a former employer?

For the most part, professionals return to previous employers not because they’re backtracking or reconsidering their career trajectory, but because a new opportunity has arisen that will propel them further in their career with a company they are already familiar and friendly with.

As well as potentially new opportunities that align with your goals, returning to a company where you already know the culture, policies, and procedures can reduce the onboarding process, allowing you to hit the ground running.

However, it is important to differentiate between returning to a previous employer for career growth— rather than simply accepting a counter offer— and consider why you sought that change in the first place. If you moved to a new role due to burnout or stagnation, returning to that same environment could lead to similar issues resurfacing.

If you find yourself considering a return to a former employer, don't be afraid to explore the idea further. Reach out to former colleagues, seek advice from recruiters, and weigh the pros and cons.

Remember, it's not a taboo subject. Boomeranging back to a former employer can be a win-win situation for both you and the company, but it’s essential to weigh the pros and cons in line with your goals before making a decision.
