Say you own a Vaughan distribution business with a large warehouse off Highway 400. The year-end inventory count won’t reconcile to the books. The bookkeeper who has kept everything running for years is retiring in the spring. You need a permanent hire, and probably a more senior one than before.
That’s when many owners start looking for a recruitment agency in Vaughan or Markham, or a CFO recruiter if the seat is more senior. York Region had 58,629 employer businesses in June 2025, the third-highest count in Ontario, and 89.6% had 1 to 19 employees, so most are small companies, often owner-run, with little or no finance team.
Who Is Hiring Accountants in Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill
In Vaughan, most finance hires are for owner-managed manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers. In Markham and Richmond Hill, they’re mostly for tech, professional services and health businesses.
York Region had about 624,000 jobs in mid-2025, not counting home-based work, and manufacturing was the biggest sector, with 14% of them. Each city has its own mix:
- Vaughan. It accounts for more than one-third of York Region’s economic output, and it is York Region’s largest industrial market, connected to Highways 400, 427 and 407. Think of a food distributor that needs someone to handle lot tracking, supplier rebates and landed cost.
- Markham. The 2024 York Region Employment Survey counted 184,645 employees in Markham, including 31,290 in professional, scientific and technical services and 18,493 in finance and insurance. Picture a hardware or software company running a Canadian subsidiary that reports to a US parent. The controller or senior accountant there produces monthly reporting packages, intercompany reconciliations and Canadian tax filings.
- Richmond Hill. The city had 4,765 businesses and 77,023 employees in the 2025 York Region Employment Survey. Here, it’s often a professional services firm or a multi-location health company, where payroll, billing reconciliations and HST carry most of the load.
The Finance Roles York Region Employers Struggle to Fill
The hardest seats are controllers and senior accountants with real inventory and costing experience, not just general ledger skills.
Senior accountants who have handled inventory cut-off and accruals for a warehouse are harder to find than most owners expect. Cut-off makes sure stock received and shipped at month-end lands in the right period. Accruals are expenses recorded in the month they’re incurred, even if the bill comes later. Controllers oversee the month-end close, the routine of finalizing and reconciling each month’s books. They need standard costing and landed cost (freight, duty, brokerage). They also keep the business within its covenants (the financial conditions in its loan agreement, such as minimum ratios). Our guide to what a controller does at a private company covers the full scope.
A full-charge bookkeeper is one who keeps the whole set of books, from daily entries to bank reconciliations and payroll.
| Role | What they own | Where the hiring gap shows |
|---|---|---|
| Full-charge bookkeeper | Inventory adjustments, accounts payable volume, HST, payroll | Strong candidates are rarely on the market |
| Staff or senior accountant | Month-end close, reconciliations, year-end file | Little experience with inventory cut-off |
| Controller | Costing, landed cost, lender reporting, the accounting or ERP system | General ledger skills without costing depth |
| VP Finance or CFO | Multi-entity reporting, banking, acquisitions | Few candidates who have led an owner-managed group |
Many applicants have spent their careers in services businesses or public practice and have never closed a month with physical inventory. On a distributor’s books, that gap shows up fast.
The 404, 407 and 400 Commute Pool, and What It Means for Your Search
Plan your search around drive time, because York Region candidates commute in from across the 400, 404 and 407 corridors.
A controller for a Vaughan or Markham employer might live in Newmarket, Aurora, Stouffville, North York, Brampton or Scarborough. A Brampton candidate can reach Vaughan easily, but getting to Markham means a long run across the 407, and those tolls add up for a daily commuter. Candidates do that math before accepting an offer. Our Brampton finance hiring guide covers the Peel Region side of this commute.
On-site work is still the norm here: 78% of York Region employees worked on-site in 2025, with 8% hybrid and 2% working from home. Plan to offer on-site or hybrid work. Ask about the commute in the first conversation.
Richmond Hill has a deep local bench: 79.0% of residents had post-secondary education and 22.1% worked in business, finance and administration occupations at the 2021 Census. In Richmond Hill, a strong candidate may already live fifteen minutes away.
How to Price a Finance Role in York Region Against Toronto
Start from Toronto rates for a Markham, Vaughan or Richmond Hill finance role, because pay here generally tracks Toronto’s. A shorter commute then helps your pitch.
Our 2026 salary guide uses Toronto and the GTA as its baseline, which is the right starting point for Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill. Some suburban employers knock a round number off a downtown salary just because they aren’t downtown. Our piece on what finance roles pay in Mississauga and Peel explains why any discount should reflect the role and the candidate’s shorter commute. The same logic applies north of Steeles Avenue, Toronto’s northern boundary. For the full cost of a controller hire beyond base salary, see controller salary in Toronto and what the hire costs.
Choosing a Recruitment Agency in Vaughan or a CFO Recruiter in Markham
Pick a recruiter for how they screen, not how close their office is.
Ask these four questions before you sign:
- Can the recruiter test technical depth? A CPA can probe costing, inventory write-downs and year-end adjustments in a first call. Most generalists can’t. Here are the questions a CPA-led screen asks a controller.
- Do they focus on permanent placements? A firm built on temp volume works differently from one built on permanent fit.
- Can they describe recent searches for distributors or manufacturers? Ask for specifics.
- How do they reach passive candidates? Many of the best controllers in York Region aren’t on job boards.
National staffing firms with local branches bring scale, and local generalist agencies bring proximity. A CPA-led boutique sends fewer candidates, and every one of them has been technically screened. Ask about fees early, too. Our breakdown of recruiter fees in Canada explains the models.
Minted Search Group is a CPA-led boutique based in downtown Toronto. Partner Jack Kalb, CA, CPA, started his career in audit at EY. We place permanent accounting and finance hires across the GTA, including Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill.
FAQ
Who are the best accounting and finance recruiters in Markham and Vaughan?
The best fit is a CPA-led recruiter focused on permanent placements, such as Minted Search Group. Look for one who can technically screen finance candidates and knows the York Region commute pool. Ask how they test costing and year-end knowledge, and how they reach people who aren’t actively looking. A short, well-screened shortlist beats a long list of resumes.
I need an accountant for a distribution warehouse near Vaughan. Where do I start?
Scope the role first. A full-charge bookkeeper keeps things current. A senior accountant runs the close and reconciliations. A controller owns costing, controls and lender reporting. If your inventory won’t reconcile, you need at least a senior accountant. Our guide to choosing between a controller or senior accountant at a private company helps you decide.
Do I need a local recruiter with a Markham office?
No. What matters more is whether the recruiter knows your area and screens candidates properly. A firm can cover York Region well from downtown Toronto if it knows the employers, pay and commute patterns there. Our article on hiring with recruiters outside Toronto explains the difference between covering a region and being present in it.
How long does it take to hire a controller in York Region?
A permanent controller search takes several weeks from kick-off to an accepted offer, and CFO searches run longer. Add the candidate’s notice period before a start date. Searches move faster when the role is clearly defined and the interview process is set before the first resume arrives. See our recruitment timeline guide for Canada for each stage.
Back to the Warehouse Off Highway 400
For that Vaughan distributor, the right hire is someone who can find out why the count is off and run the close every month afterward. They also need to live within a drive they’ll still be happy making in year three. That person exists in York Region, but probably won’t see your posting. As a CPA-led boutique focused on permanent placements, Minted Search Group can help you reach them.
